Explore Kununurra & East Kimberley

View Guides
Kununurra is the gateway to the East Kimberley and your base from which to explore this region. Even within the Kimberley, this is remote, making it one of the most isolated travel destinations in the world. It’s a fun town with plenty to see and do and the East Kimberley vast, diverse and endlessly beautiful.
There are several exquisite Argyle Diamond stores, and one of the largest ranges of Indigenous artworks in the country – the beautiful yet severe landscape has inspired countless artists, and their work is shown in the local galleries. Visit Celebrity Tree Park, Mirima National Park, (also known as Hidden Valley), Zebra Rock, and the Historical Society Museum. If you’re up for swimming, try Valentine Springs, Molly Spring, and (if you’re particularly fi t and agile) give Andy’s Chasm a go. For something more relaxing, take in an evening movie at the outdoor Picture Gardens.

In Kununurra, you’ll find supermarkets and cafes (be sure to grab a mango smoothie while you’re there). If you’re feeling social, the PumpHouse is a thriving bar and restaurant within a converted water station.

For fresh fruit, head out to historic Ivanhoe Crossing, over the Ord River. Tour around the town and the Ord Irrigation Area, and discover the amazing fresh produce. If you’ve got some time up your sleeve, fi t in a visit to the Hoochery, Western Australia’s oldest continually operating rum distillery.

You can’t leave town without catching – or at least eating – the elusive barramundi that attract scores of fishermen to the region. Get in touch with local operators to fish at a secret spot.

Kununurra offers plentiful accommodation, including caravan parks, hotel/motels, resorts, backpackers, B&B and self-contained apartments. Most tour companies will pick you up from your accommodation. Out of town, you’ll find outback camping, station stays and remote coastal safari camps.

Wyndham

An hour north of Kununurra, Wyndham is the top town of the west, geographically. It’s a small frontier town that typifies the true pioneering character of the Kimberley region. Stop at the Five Rivers lookout in the Bastion Ranges, take the Three Mile Valley Walking Trail, have lunch at Wyndham Port, and see the Aboriginal Dreamtime statues.

Halls Creek

Halls Creek is the ideal place to set up camp and explore the East Kimberley landscape, including the Purnululu National Park, the Wolfe Creek Crater, and the China Wall.

El Questro

Join a 4WD tour to the vast El Questro Wilderness Park – it’s eight times the size of Switzerland. Take a tour from the Homestead and visit Zebedee thermal springs; hike and swim at Emma Gorge, or cruise Chamberlain Gorge; learn about bush foods, bush culture and history, or just drive around the grand landscape. Scenic flights over the Mitchell Plateau are also available. Campers can sleep under a blanket of stars in the crisp clean air, or set up a tent by the river. For a treat, book into the luxurious oasis that is El Questro Homestead and take in the spectacular view over the river as you cool off in the pool.

Lake Argyle

This man-made phenomenon, a pleasant 70km drive southeast of Kununurra on the border of the Northern Territory, is something of a miracle. Some ambitious folk envisaged a reservoir on the Ord River to irrigate the ancient Kimberley plateau, and it actually worked – Kununurra has become a tropical fruit bowl and agricultural centre, in the middle of nowhere. With a surface area of about 1000sqkm, Lake Argyle is more than a water supply to the town and local farmers. Its unique ecosystem is home to an amazing array of wildlife, including freshwater crocodiles, 26 species of native fish, and 270 bird species, plus all kinds of marsupials on the islands. The best way to see the lake is on a boat cruise, where you’ll see the spillway and the dam. Don’t miss the old Argyle Homestead and museum

Kingfisher Tours are very conscious of our pristine wilderness that we live and tour in. Tourism does not have to have a large footprint on the environment and local culture. As such we have introduced several initiatives to minimise the single use plastic in the business and continue to encourage other tour operators to do the same. We also believe tourism is an important industry to generate future employment and pride for local people. We work closely with other businesses to grow and support this ethos.

Kingfisher Tours want to ensure a positive experience for local people, tourism companies, and tourists alike.

Triple J Tours

Triple J Tours offers one of Australia's longest daily river cruises. An extraordinary 55km (one way) on the section of the Ord River known as Lake Kununurra between the Ord Top Dam and Diversion Dam

  • Open days/Times:April - October
  • Tour Price:From $145
  • Suited For:Families
  • Type:Tours

Details

  • Tour Capacity:Full Day
  • Tour Locations:Ord River between Kununurra and the Ord Top Dam at Lake Argyle.

Description

Triple J Tours have been offering one of the longest daily river cruises in Australia between Kununurra and the Ord Top Dam at Lake Argyle, in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, since 1988.

This extraordinary cruise covers the wilderness area between Kununurra and the Ord Top Dam, a 55-kilometre expedition along the most beautiful river and gorge country in Australia. Highlighting the development of the ambitious Ord River Irrigation Scheme, the resulting agriculture and the consequent ecosystem that has flourished after the Kununurra Diversion Dam was constructed in 1963, you will be amazed at what its creation has achieved.

Triple J Tours provides one of the most exhilarating and educational tours in WA and their skippers are knowledgeable and friendly.

You will enjoy a range of experiences including wildlife interpretation, photography, bird watching, geology appreciation, cultural interpretation, history and agriculture.  Admire spectacular scenery, flora, bird life, crocodiles and flying foxes all from the comfort of one of their vessels aptly named ‘Peregrine’, ‘Harrier’ and ‘Osprey’.  Fully shaded and with toilets on-board, these vessels cruise the river with ease and are ergonomically constructed so as to cause as little damage as possible to the river bank.

Touring options can include a 70km coach transfer through ‘Durack country’ from Kununurra to Lake Argyle (or vice versa).  This includes a visit to the historic Durack Homestead Museum.  This magnificent homestead was originally built in 1895 by the Durack family on Argyle Downs Station (now mostly submerged by the lake).  During the early 1970’s a decision was made to remove the Homestead before Lake Argyle began to fill in order to preserve this magnificent building for all time.  The Homestead was dismantled stone by stone with every stone coded in such a way so as to be able to be rebuilt with every stone back in its original position.  The homestead now lives on as a museum dedicated to the pioneering spirit of the Durack family.

You may also select an option that includes a home-made buffet lunch or afternoon tea at one of the companies secluded riverside camps on the banks of the river.

Triple J Tours has vessels that can seat between 28 and 50 people.  Book now for not only the longest but also one of the best, most informative river cruises in Australia.

Endurance Walks
The Remote Wilderness Treks come with varying physical demands. The four walks - The Durack, Carr Boyd, Speewah and Purnululu involve carrying up to 15-20kg packs for 7-8 days over diverse terrain. With the correct preparation and support from our qualified Trek Leaders, anyone with reasonable levels of fitness can enjoy this special experience. Please see our Fitness Prepartion for more information on getting prepared.
