Description

Sassafras combines toe-tapping swing, breakneck gypsy classics, wistful french ballads and re-worked jazz standards in a vibrant and engaging mix of acoustic music, all performed with the dazzling virtuosity and passion that is intrinsic to the gypsy jazz tradition. The band features Jessie Gordon (voice), Aaron Deacon & Lachlan Gear (acoustic guitars), Adrian Galante (clarinet) and Pete Jeavons (bass), and they have sold out numerous shows at the Ellington Jazz Club, The Duke of George, Lyric's Underground, Kidogo Arthouse, The Stirling Arms, The Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre and more. For six years in a row, Sassafras has presented a season of shows as part of the Perth Fringeworld Festival ("An Evening in Paris" from 2016-18,"Under Paris Skies" in 2019, "An Evening of Gypsy Swing" in 2020 and "Gypsy Jazz Soirée" in 2021) – all to sell out crowds and rave reviews. The band has also featured at a number of other festivals including: The Jazz By The Bay Festival (2017, 2019), Perth International Jazz Festival (2017, 2018), King Street Corner Pocket Festival (2018, 2019), Perth Festival (2021) and the Oz Manouche Festival (Brisbane, 2018).

Did you know that big band music has continued to evolve and push boundaries from the Golden Age of Swing? Composers such as Bill Holman, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely and Maria Schneider have used big band instrumentation to create some of the most creative and exciting jazz in recent decades. The Wednesday Night Orchestra will be joined by Perth’s very own modern master on tenor saxophone, Dr Jamie Oehlers (WAYJO member 1987-93). Join WAYJO for this special night, also premiering 2021 WAYJO Composer in Residence works by Brendan Keller-Tuberg (ACT) and Reece Clark (WA). Jamie appears thanks to WAYJO’s 2021 Major Programs Partner, Minderoo Foundation.

Taking place from November 5-7 in Perth and November 13 in Busselton, this year’s Perth International Jazz Festival offers the very best for music lovers of all kinds with performances catering to jazz purists right the way through to the popular jazz-influenced sounds of funk, Latin, hip-hop and beyond.

Opening on Friday with a free event at the State Theatre Centre with a performance via live stream from Amsterdam by Tin Men and the Telephone who’ll present their ‘GREATEST show.'

National guest artists includes Adelaide multi-instrumentalist, Adam Page; two of Australia’s leading improvisers – Scott Tinkler & Julius Schwing from Bruny Island, Tasmania; and funky-synth-dance trio from Adelaide – Er@ser Description.

PIJF’s expanded program also includes performances at the WA Museum Boola Bardip, the Ellington Jazz Club, The Rechabite, Cathedral Square, and a Secret Rooftop in the CBD, as well as Northbridge Piazza which will be transformed into the hippest outdoor bar.

PIJF is partnering with ECU / WAAPA, City of Perth and Lotterywest for performances in Forrest Place on Saturday and Sunday; and on the Sunday, PIJF partners with City of Vincent and Lotterywest for the popular Jazz Picnic in Hyde Park.

PIJF opens with RTRFM’s Courtyard Club featuring Daniel Susnjar’s Afro-Peruvian Jazz Group – an award-winning 7-piece ensemble influenced by Afro- Peruvian rhythms and fresh arrangements of Peruvian folk songs, followed by a performance via live stream from Amsterdam by Tin Men and the Telephone. Tin Men will present their ‘GREATEST show’ – a spicy combination of jazz tunes and technology on the topic of climate change. Interact with this performance in real-time using the bands ‘Tinmendo’ App. Download from the App Store or Google Play before the show. Closing the night is Dr Richard Walley’s Six Seasons with Junkadelic Orchestra featuring a collection of original songs paying homage to the Noongar seasons. Tin Men and the Telephone present the GREATEST show – Global Relocation of Evolved Apes Towards Exoplanet Suitable for Terraformation: a new immersive multimedia performance that combines improvised music, visuals, and audience participation via a smartphone app to address the very timely topic of climate change in a uniquely interactive, fun and thought-provoking way. In the (very) near future, the climate crisis has escalated, and the time has come for humanity to leave planet Earth. A new, nearly inhabitable planet has been discovered, and you and your fellow audience members are the chosen few to find themselves on board a space ship heading towards this new home. However, your destination is currently far too cold for human life but have no fear! This problem should be resolved soon, as humans have proven to be excellent at heating up their environment. As you travel through space, you must collaborate to make a plan to warm up your new home and enjoy the live in-flight entertainment by Tin Men and the Telephone along the way. You will be able to interact with this performance in real-time using the bands 'Tinmendo' App.

Description

Adam Page is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, music educator and record producer based in Adelaide. Known widely for his critically acclaimed solo multi-instrumental looping performances, Page has carved his path internationally as a composer. He has written major works for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington, Zephyr Quartet and co-composed on numerous occasions with celebrated Kiwi composer John Psathas. Page has recently composed and performed with The Grigoryan Brothers, established the boutique record label - Wizard Tone Records, established and performed with his new 12 piece ensemble - The Adam Page Ensemble (TAPE).

Helen Matthews has been called “a mover and a shaker” and “a cornerstone of the Australian Jazz scene”. She is “WA’s First Lady of Jazz”, “the earth mother of Perth’s chanteuses”, and “one of the finest jazz vocalists this country has produced”. With a career spanning over half a century, Matthews has performed for the Queen and the Pope and is responsible for some of the most innovative jazz projects and festivals that WA has ever seen. In this exclusive show for PIJF, vocalists Ali Bodycoat and Libby Hammer with long-time contemporaries Ray Walker, Karl Florisson, Gary Howard, and special guest Sue Bluck, perform the music for which Matthews is most well-known – celebrating and acknowledging her exceptional achievements.

Tinkler & Schwing have spent the last three years on Bruny Island developing structures and strategies for improvisation on trumpet and guitar. What started as a mentorship has developed into a rich and deep collaboration. The focus of their practice has been improvisations informed by and in response to each other and specific acoustic environments such as lighthouses, boats, stairwells and sheds.
