Cervantes to Dongara

View Guides
Starting just two hours north of Perth, via Indian Ocean Drive, this region offers an easy escape to more than 1000km of coastline. Tens of thousands of visitors head to the sunny Coral Coast each year, to play on unspoilt beaches and explore rugged and unique national parks. The southernmost seaside towns make great day-trip or short-break destinations. Cervantes is probably best known for the astonishing Pinnacles Desert. People also visit to feast on fresh seafood, spot sea lions, view wildflowers, and camp on the beach in Dongara-Port Denison.

On the North West Coastal Highway, is the region’s hub. Geraldton is a trendy seaside city with new cafes, shops and art galleries. Beautiful beaches and a warm, windy climate attract water-sport enthusiasts. Two hours further north, Kalbarri is surrounded by national park, with quad-biking, sandboarding, skydiving and horseriding adventures on offer.

While Monkey Mia’s friendly dolphins are a major drawcard, Shark Bay has so much more to offer. Check out the area’s contrasting landscapes, wildlife and flora to see why it is listed as a World Heritage area.

On the highway north of Shark Bay, Carnarvon enjoys a warm, sunny climate all year round and is a great place to sample local fruit, vegetables and seafood. The entire coast makes for a magical roadtrip, with phenomena like the Carnarvon blowholes, 75km north of the town.

At the top of the reef is another World Heritage area. The Ningaloo Coast spans 300km along pristine coastline, from Red Bluff to Exmouth. While it offers boundless opportunities to see marine life on the world’s largest fringing reef, the area is best known for its giant whale sharks.

Alternatively enjoy the amazing scenery and abundance of Wildflowers on the walking trails around the Headland or take a picnic among stunning Fauna and Flora in the Lesueur National Park. Green head is a perfect location to visit the nearby Sea Lions or the Stockyard Gully Caves are just a short drive inland. Adjacent to the caves you will find Little Three Springs this is an oasis among shrub covered sand dunes. The Pinnacles are a short drive south and are a must see.

The Pinnacles: There are many stories circulating about who found the Pinnacles, how old they are and how did they form. In the mid 1600s some Dutch explorers stumbled upon the Pinnacles and thought they were the remains of an ancient civilisation. During sunrise and sunset as the play of light bring out the colours and the extended shadows of the formation delivers a contrast that bring out their features. A visitor precinct and interpretive centre was completed in 2008, many of your questions will be answered here.

Walking Trails: During the cooler months, bushwalking is a popular past time. In town, try the trail around the Headland from the jetty around to South Bay or head out to the Lesueur National Park.

Mount Lesueur National Park: The town site of GreenHead is surrounded by reserves-national park. Mt Leisure National Park covers 2700 hectares and is world renowned for its diversity of wild flowers. 1200 species have been identified but not surprisingly there are still over 300 species to be identified.

The department of environment has improved the infrastructure by installing bitchimized loop for the discovering and viewing of the unique flora and fauna. The best season to see the wildflowers in bloom is from August through until October.

Stockyard Gully Caves: The Stockyard Gully Caves are just a short drive inland from CentreBreak Beach Stay, this forms part of the old north stock route, this runs between Champion Bay (Geraldton) North Beach (Perth). The cave is an underground river bed with ravine at one end, this was used as a stockyard by the drovers for a stop over when droving there stock to market. The caves make for an interesting discovery while exploring the many attractions Green Head has to offer. There are picnic and toilet facilities available. 4WD only.

Little Three Springs: Adjacent to the caves you will find Little Three Springs, this is an oasis among shrub covered sand dunes and is made up of three natural springs; this was one of the watering holes used for the horses and stock along the old North Stock Route. You can still see the brumbies drinking here if you’re lucky.

Join the trail via the board-walked Wetlands Trail which skirts North Lake and takes you through the wetlands area which is teaming with bird life. Keep an eye out for the Yanget (bullrush) used by local Noongar people for food.

The Ghost House Walk Trail offers plenty of interst and variety as it passes through tuart forest, banksia woodlands and coastal heath. The trail ends at Cabaret Cave and is a short walk back to the hub of Yanchep where you can stop for a coffee, refreshing ale or lunch.

One of the draw cards of Yanchep is the koala Boardwalk.  Koalas are fussy eaters and only eat certain types of eucalyptus leaves.  They are not native to Western Australia and Yanchep is one of the few places you can see them.  You'll pass through the koala feed plantation on your way from McNess House to the start of the trail.

Yanchep National Park is a hub of walk trails of varying length and difficulty.  After completing your walks, why not hire a boat to row over the lake (seasonal), take a guided tour of the caves, visit the koalas or enjoy a barbeque in the park amongst the kangaroos.
