Darkfield's COMA

COMA, the third installation of the highly acclaimed multi-sensory series, DARKFIELD, invites participants to slip into a collective dream state in its FRINGE WORLD premiere.

  • Dates:Jan 15 - Feb 14
  • Venue:Woodside Pleasure Garden
  • Festivals:Fringe Festival

Details

  • Hosted By:Realscape Productions
  • Performing Arts:Theatre
  • Produced By:Fringe World
  • Event Venue:Woodside Pleasure Garden

Description

Presented by Realscape Productions (AU) in association with Darkfield (UK), COMA will join its predecessors, SÉANCE and FLIGHT, three ubiquitous white sea-containers that each explore a theme of fear and anxiety, in complete and utter darkness.

Where SÉANCE tested the audiences’ susceptibility to suggestible material, and FLIGHT jolted its passengers between this world and alternates, COMA invites audiences to take part in a strange mass experiment, to explore the dark recesses of their own mind, over 30 minutes.

COMA is set in a 40ft sea-container, each wall lined with bunk beds. Audiences members lie down in a bed, each becoming separated from their counterparts. Alone in the darkness, the multi-sensory elements engulf each participant, suggestive of the show’s own namesake.
Please remember when you leave, to take your body with you.

As with all DARKFIELD experiences, a strange world is built from 360 degree binaural sound that perplexes the senses, deepening the immersion by casting doubt on what is real and what is imagined. Loss of vision heightens the remaining senses, making them vulnerable to manipulation.

For the team at Realscape Productions, the WA season marks the return of the Darkfield sea-containers to their Australian tour, having been stored in a paddock since COVID closed the doors on much of the theatre industry in March.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to be able to present in WA, as the city comes alive with the Fringe, the audiences in Perth are always exceptional. We’re in a very different situation to our UK counterparts,” commented Amy Johnson, producer at Realscape Productions.

Those looking for a taste of what to expect before FRINGE WORLD, can tune in to Darkfield Radio, a series of audio encounters designed to be experienced at home. Darkfield’s creators David Rosenberg and Glen Neath are the masterminds behind the immersive experiences, and have recently sparked global attention of XR and VR communities with their ability to create worlds for the audience using only audio.

COMA, FLIGHT and SÉANCE will run frequently at various times from Tuesday - Sunday in the Woodside Pleasure Garden from 15 January - 14 February, 2021.

COMA and FLIGHT run for 30 minutes and cost $25 and SÉANCE runs for 20 minutes and costs $20. Tickets are available at www.fringeworld.com.au

Prior to FRINGE WORLD, FLIGHT will embark on its first ever regional Australian season in Mandurah WA from December 4 - 20, 2020

Elixir

This cirque sensation is a vibrant crowd pleaser that follows three scientists searching for the ultimate body enhancing human elixir.

  • Dates:Jan 15 - 31; Feb 2 - 14
  • Time(s):9:40pm
  • Festivals:Fringe Festival
  • Venue:The Edith Spiegeltent at The Woodside Pleasure Garden

Details

  • Hosted By:Perth Fringe Festival
  • Performing Arts:Circus
  • Produced By:Fringe World
  • Event Venue:Woodside Pleasure Garden

Description

If you think science can’t be sexy, you are very very mistaken. This February, Elixir, a potent concoction of chemical balance and imbalance, new school death-defying acrobatics, old school slapstick comedy, and an injection of good old Aussie testosterone, will challenge perceptions and set pulses racing at the 2021 Perth Fringe Festival in the Edith Spiegeltent at the Woodside Pleasure Garden.

Elixir is a circus spectacular – only different. Uninhibited by cliché or expectation, subversive and hilarious, the production follows the story of three enthusiastic, slightly bumbling yet skilfully acrobatic scientists who attempt to create the elixir of life. The show sees the sexy scientists test their concoctions on themselves and follows the mayhem that ensues with a mesmerizing mix of dizzying acrobatics and impeccable comic timing. Audiences can expect acrobats flying five metres into the air on the teeterboard, spinning upside-down in the cyr wheel, performing one-arm handstands on wobbling canes, and balancing on nothing but their heads on a swinging trapeze.

Elixir is the first show from award-winning Melbourne entertainment company Head First Acrobats; receiving international acclaim with sell-out shows, rave reviews, and picking up a slew of awards over the last few years including Best Circus and Theatre Award at Adelaide Fringe in 2018.

Along with Elixir, Head First Acrobats have proved crowd-favourites at Fringe Festivals year after year, adding the hilarious Railed to their repertoire in 2019. As a company, they are dedicated to providing world-class circus and physical theatre performance – thrilling audiences at festivals, in theatres, and at corporate and street events across Australia and internationally.

Leave expectations at the door (and definitely leave the kids at home!), Elixir’s bare chests, hilarious antics, and incredible high-energy acrobatic stunts will leave you breathless and wanting for more.

Head First Acrobats shows have a tendency to sell out FAST so book early to avoid disappointment!

Description

With her ethereal soprano vocals, jazz-inspired tunes and unique sense of style, Jones was the iconic figure of the alt/pop music scene of the 70s and 80s. When Jones met Tom Waits in '77 the course of her career would change forever. After an intense two-year relationship, the pair went their separate ways, but what would ensue is the best break-up album of all time 'Pirates' and the hit single 'We Belong Together'. We Belong(ed) Together explores the captivating life and music of Rickie Lee Jones. Presented with an incredible line-up of local jazz talent, this show will have you swept away with the power of Jones' music and mesmerized by her story.
